Challenge / Goal
The challenge/goal of the project is to enable Waterford to become a regional city of scale, leading the economic development for the South-East and expanding and enhancing the local economy to realise the potential of the city and the region as a whole. The project also aims to create a sustainable and exemplary city centre development that supports social inclusion, environmental quality and zero carbon emissions.
Solution
The solution to that challenge is to develop the North Quays as a Strategic Development Zone (SDZ), which allows for a holistic plan-led approach and a fast-track planning procedure. The project also leverages public funding from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to enable private investment from Falcon Real Estate Development Ireland. The project also integrates sustainable transport modes such as train, bus, pedestrian and cycling to improve connectivity and accessibility between the North Quays and the city centre.
