The Sustainable Mobility Academy (SMA) was developed by BABLE Smart Cities as part of the Smart & Sustainable Mobility Accelerator: Building Capacity for Action in our Regions (SSMA). This initiative was led by Southern Regional Assembly (SRA), in partnership with Eastern and Midland Regional Assembly (EMRA), and Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA). The programme was announced in October 2022 by the Department of Transport under the National Pathfinder Programme, focusing on engagement and research. The creation of the Sustainable Mobility Academy is one of the first deliverables of the project.
This initiative supports the National Sustainable Mobility Policy goals for safe, green, and people-focused mobility, aiming for better-integrated mobility. Key targets include a 50% reduction in transport emissions and 500,000 additional walking, cycling, and public transport journeys by 2030.
The Pathfinder project also aligns with the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies of the SRA, EMRA, and NWRA. It aims to achieve Regional Policy Objectives for compact growth, sustainable development, placemaking, and a lower carbon future.
The Sustainable Mobility Academy's online platform is a resource for sharing knowledge about case study projects, outcomes, and progress across all Local Authorities in the Regions for active travel and sustainable mobility.
