Challenge / Goal
To improve the connectivity, accessibility and mobility of people in the northwest region, especially those living in rural and disadvantaged areas, and to enhance the quality of life and well-being of the local communities.
To develop a network of safe, attractive and accessible greenways that link towns and villages across the border, providing opportunities for walking, cycling and other forms of active travel. The greenways also connect to existing natural and cultural heritage sites, encouraging visitors to explore the rich and diverse landscape of the region.
Solution
The North West Greenway Network has been developed as a part of a cross border network of greenways delivered in partnership with Derry City and Strabane District Council and primarily funded through the INTERREG VA programme. The network is comprised of two cross border routes. The first route comprising of c. 18 km connects Derry’s Quayside Trail to Bay Road Park via the Pennyburn Inlet continuing on to Quigley's Point via Culmore. The second route comprising of 13km connects Strabane to Castlefinn via Lifford. This project is an exemplar initiative of cross border collaboration with Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council working together to realise 46.5km of segregated cycle lanes.
