Challenge / Goal
The main challenge that goMonaghan addresses is the lack of public transport options and connectivity in rural areas of Monaghan, which affects the quality of life, social inclusion, and economic development of the local communities. The goal of the project is to provide a sustainable and user-friendly mobility solution that meets the diverse needs and preferences of the rural population, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting active travel modes.
Solution
The solution that goMonaghan offers is a combination of different transport services that are tailored to the specific needs and demands of each area. The project uses a demand-responsive transport (DRT) system, which allows users to book a bus ride in advance through a phone call or an app, and then pick them up at a designated stop or their doorstep. The project also provides bike-sharing and car-sharing schemes, which enable users to access bicycles or cars for short-term use. Additionally, the project installs electric vehicle charging stations at strategic locations, such as public buildings, car parks, and tourist attractions. All these services are integrated with a single app and payment system, called goMonaghan Mobility App, which allows users to plan their journeys across different modes, compare prices and travel times, and pay for their trips using a prepaid account or a credit/debit card.
