Challenge / Goal

The main challenge faced by Dublin Bikes was to overcome the low cycling culture and infrastructure in the city, as well as the high costs and risks associated with launching a new service.

Solution

Dublin Bikes partnered with JCDecaux, a global leader in outdoor advertising, to design, install and operate the scheme. JCDecaux provided the bikes, stations, maintenance and customer service, while Dublin City Council provided the land, planning permission and promotion. The scheme was funded by a 15-year contract that gave JCDecaux exclusive rights to 72 advertising panels in the city centre.
