Challenge / Goal
Darmstadt is a growing city with many commuters and high traffic congestion at peak times. Until a few years ago, Darmstadt was one of the cities with the highest nitrogen dioxide pollution levels in Germany. The primary goal of the project was thus to reduce NO2 pollutant emissions from traffic by creating a digital and real-time traffic management system.
The implementation of the project objectives was based on the already developed measures of the Green City Plan Darmstadt (Masterplan GCP DA - Measures and bundle of measures to reduce NO2 pollution of 31.07.2018).
Solution
The "Traffic and Environmental Sensors" project uses intelligent traffic sensors and guidance systems to enable more targeted control of traffic volumes, thereby ensuring smoother traffic flows. To this end, sensors detect the vehicle types and average speeds of passing vehicles, which can then be guided via traffic control measures. This forward-looking technology saves time for all road users and hence also minimises pollutants in the urban area.
The real-time capable urban traffic computer can integrate this traffic data, as well as environment-related data obtained via a dedicated sensor network, into future control concepts. Provided as open data, the data obtained serves, for example, the scientific research work of technical universities and start-ups.
