The European Union is planning to ban the sale of new diesel buses by 2027, according to a leaked draft of the bloc's Fit for 55 package. The proposal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport by 90% by 2050, and to accelerate the transition to zero-emission mobility.

The draft document, obtained by Transport & Environment, a Brussels-based NGO, states that "from 2027 onwards, only zero-emission buses will be allowed to be placed on the market". This means that diesel, gas and hybrid buses will no longer be sold in the EU after that date. The measure is expected to boost the demand for electric and hydrogen buses, which currently account for less than 3% of the EU bus fleet. According to Transport & Environment, the EU needs at least 90,000 zero-emission buses by 2030 to meet its climate targets.
